It's Cairns Cup day on Saturday and we've got your race-by-race preview with suggested plays.
Race 1 - 1:14PM FGF BITUMEN Maiden Handicap - 1250m
Geraldine's Wish (3) has been knocking on the door of a maiden victory placing in four of five this time in work and may have found her right race here. Has placed three from three around this circuit and gets some weight relief with the 2kg claim. Can finally shed the maiden tag against this lot. Spring's Gift (11) is another to have had a few chances but has finished runner-up in both outings this preparation and gets the services of Thomas in the irons. Looms as the main danger. Charm Teller (10) resumes here but showed ability when last in work and can run a big race while fresh. Starmeira (12) has been thereabouts in recent efforts and may earn some minor money. Extremely Frilly (5) next in line despite the wide draw.
Suggested Play: Geraldine's Wish to finally break through
Race 2 - 1:49PM EARLVILLE SHOPPING TOWN QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap - 1250m
Gem Of Scots (6) broke the maiden status here at the latest effort and is sure to have derived a stack of confidence from that breakthrough victory. Winning hoop Murphy sticks in the saddle and should be going very close again. Vegameister (1) is another to get the maiden out of the way at Townsville last start and faces a lot of similar rivals in this contest. Can go back-to-back. Supid Date (7) is drawn to get all the favours from the inside alley and will be rock-hard fit for this. Top-three credentials. Mister Tia (4) has a win and a placing from two spins around this circuit and is a must for the multiples. Gold Classic (3) rounds out the selections.
Suggested Play: Boxed Trifecta 6,1,7,4
Race 3 - 2:24PM LADBROKES BENCHMARK 78 Handicap - 1250m
Almighty Jab (7) is a very consistent conveyance who is a three-time winner here and doesn't know how to run a bad race. Definite winning prospects now that Highbar has been scratched. Turbeau (3) gets the reliable Wassingham/Wiggins combination and looks to be on the doorstep of another victory. Must be included in calculations. Loud Noise (4) goes well for hoop Swaffer who has four wins and five placings from 14 steers. Again gets her claim and can make his presence felt. Early Fusion (2) is better than the past couple of efforts suggest and looks one for the multiples. He's Xceptional (1) next in line with the claim.
Suggested Play: Leaning towards Almighty Jab
Race 4 - 3:04PM GREAT NORTHERN BREWING CO. BENCHMARK 70 Handicap - 1400m
Lean Eagle (3) has strung three wins together on the bounce and is racing with a lot of confidence of late. Has only missed a quinella spot once in six starts around this circuit and gets Wiggins back on board to navigate from the outside draw. Should be right there at the business end again. Going Nuclear (1) has won three of his past five and gets plenty of weight relief with the 3kg claim. Definite top-three prospects. Lucky Exchange (2) brings Toowoomba formlines to the table and should get a cosy run from gate two. Keep very safe. Brave Agenda (8) has just run into one better at the past couple and may make her presence felt. Turn Bird (5) is a last-start winner who shouldn't be slept on.
Suggested Play: Lean Eagle to continue the picket fence
Race 5 - 3:39PM MAGIC MILLIONS DAINTREE GUINEAS QTIS 4YO Handicap - 1500m
The $75,000 Daintree Guineas. Obligated (1) grows a leg for hoop Butler who has three wins and a placing from just five steers and will be high on confidence following that last-start Townsville victory. Drawn to sit handy from the inside alley and should be right there when the whips are cracking. Swatow (4) has two wins and three seconds from his past five starts and Cormack stays in the saddle. Looms as the main danger. Attentive (5) got the job done here by the narrowest of margins last time out and looks ready for the step-up in trip now. Top-three candidate. Khals (6) has gotten better with each run this time in and will be ready to peak now. In the mix. Kickagoal Kenny (9) next in line.
Suggested Play: Obligated to go back-to-back
Race 6 - 4:19PM LOUIE PICCONE MEMORIAL BENCHMARK 60 Handicap - 950m
They'll go like the clappers in this. Former Victorian Hartshorn (3) is a consistent conveyance who has hit the top-five in 13 of 14 starts since joining the new stable and is usually up in the firing line. Is a two-time winner over this course and distance and gets some weight relief with the 2kg claim. Should be right there when the judge calls a halt. Time To Prophet (6) just missed the placings in the Lightning here at the latest effort and that form is good enough for a race like this. Has to be included. Bella Bianca (12) has placed two of three over this track and trip, gets in light with the claim and draws the inside alley. Ticks a few boxes. Lucky Rolla (5) is a four-time winner over this sprint journey and will give backers a sight. Yamabushi (7) best of the rest while fresh.
Suggested Play: Hartshorn to get a well-deserved victory
Race 7 - 4:54PM RED BERET HOTEL CAIRNS CUP - 2100m
The feature race on the card, the $150,000 Cairns Cup. Sir Grace (7) has been on the doorstep of late finishing runner-up in the Townsville and Mackay Cups and doesn't face either of those winners in this line-up. Handles all going and can go one better against this lot. Logan Street Lion (1) has been right there in similar contests of late and only needs some luck navigating from the sticky draw to be playing a major role in the outcome. The well-related Perovic (15) (half to 2xG1 winner King's Legacy) has won three from five here on his home circuit and is racing with a lot of confidence at present. Cannot be discounted. Former Robl galloper Smart Legend (8) has shown improvement since joining the Massingham barn and another strong run would not surprise. Stadium Of Light (13) next in line from the favourable draw.
Suggested Play: Backing Sir Grace

Race 8 - 5:26PM CSF INDUSTRIES VIC TONKIN MEMORIAL Class 3 Plate - 1250m
Open race to close out the card. Former Victorian Cardiologist (6) is having his first run for the new stable but has tuned up for this with a recent trial win and should find this easier than what he faced down south. Has placed five from six over this distance range and looks the one they all have to run down. Ellie's Dream (16) has placed eight of ten over this track and trip and doesn't know how to put in a poor one. A must for the exotics players. Former SA galloper Novela (9) is first-up for the new yard but showed ability when last in work and any market moves must be respected. Skogafoss (3) has only missed a place once in seven starts around this circuit and can make his presence felt again. Better Be Slick (5) next best from the low draw.
Suggested Play: Boxed Trifecta 6,16,9,3
