Chris Scholtz reviews barrier trials at Warwick Farm on September 4, Wyong on September 8 and Rosehill oin September 9.
ROSEHILL September 9
13 Heats; Soft 5
Course Proper – 1 x 1000m (Open)
Inside Grass – 5 x 1030m (3 Open; 2 Maiden); 7 x 900m (3 Open; 4 Maiden)
Rarely does a Golden Slipper winner line up against a TJ Smith winner in a barrier trial.
MARHOONA and BRIASA met in a 1000m heat on the course proper with the older sprinter BRIASA asserting his class with a workout that has him firmly on track to the $20 million Everest next month.
The big grey, with the benefit of his first up trial win at Canterbury on August 16 behind him, jumped best and comfortably pulled his way to a three lengths lead after 400m. Tyler Schiller allowed him to track wide as he easily maintained his advantage to the finish (59.90; 33.28), being kept under a tight hold while MARHOONA was pushed along to take some ground off him over the last 200m. BRIASA has won seven of his 10 starts and might just be the best of our local sprinters this spring.

Easy work for the #TABEverest contender and @G1TySchil in a 1000m trial at Rosehill on Tuesday. Also trialling were Light Infantry Man, More Felons, Firestorm and Unspoken. @tabcomau pic.twitter.com/z7qfmnVdr9
A classy filly is also ready to step up after a super win in her heat over 1030m
DANCE TO THE BOOM (Bjorn Baker): Fitter for her recent first-up fourth at Rosehill, the Gosford Guineas winner was a standout winner of the fastest 1030m heat (61.73; 34.30), unleashing an impressive sprint to come from six lengths off the lead at 500m and win running away by 4.5 lengths untouched. Wide on the turn, her sectionals over the last 400m are a strong platform for her chances in coming fillies races.
Other notable open heat winners over 1030m included the good mares OUR QUEEN (63.03; 34.37) and OH DIAMOND LIL (62.51; 35.42), both dominating their trials from the front.
The racy maiden HAYEK recorded the fastest 900m heat win (54.07; 34.85) but was tiring late with strong trials by the placegetters ATTRACTIVENESS and LAVENDER ROSE. Other notable 900m heat winners included IMPERIAL FORCE (54.17; 34.02), ASSUMED (56.33; 35.49) and GORGEOUS (55.65; 35.01) while runners to take the eye with their late work included IKNOWASTAR, MILES OF GLORY; ISTOLEA MERC; PERFUMIST; LET'S FLY; LADY GIOVANNA and NANDINA.
It was our first look a the unraced I Am Invincible filly ASSUMED and while her winning time was slow she was under a tight hold from start to finish and shapes as a 3YO with a bright future.

WYONG September 8

19 Heats – 1 x 1200m (Open); 7 x 1000m (4 Open; 3 Maiden); 11 x 845m (3 Open; 8 Maiden)
Leading metro trainers are increaslngly using provincial trials as an important part of their training process with some classy types from city stables adding plenty of depth to this big session.
G1 winner GRINGOTTS controlled the speed in the open 1200m heat (71.57; 35.51), appreciating the good track conditions to record a comfortable win over Group performers ROYAL PATRONAGE and ROYAL SUPREMACY. The highly rated import ELAMAZ tracked three wide for the last 800m but I would have liked to have seen him finish off with more zest.
The four open heats over 1000m saw some promising trials with SHANGRI LA SPRING from the Waterhouse/Bott yard ridden along for the last 400m to gain the upper hand for a narrow win in the fastest time (58.82; 34.84). The runner-up HIDDEN MOTIVE was never off the bit sharing the lead on the inside of the winner and would have won the trial easily if asked for a serious effort. This work backed up his impressive trial win at Gosford last month and ensures he will be strongly fancied to add to his good record when next produced.
There were some nice efforts in the other open 1000m heats with BROADWAY BOUNCER, IMPOSANT and BEND THE KNEE taking the eye with their closing work.
There were numerous good trials in the maiden heats over 1000m and 845m but two efforts stood out.
REAL BAKER (Bjorn Baker): Just the second trial and first since last November by this Winning Rupert gelding with his ability clearly obvious as he kicked away in his 845m heat for an impressive 3.5 lengths win (49.50; 34.54). The Baker stable is adept at placing their maidens to advantage and I'm sure they will find the right race for this 3YO.
RIPLEY (Ciaron Maher): This Too Darn Hot colt was placed in both city starts last season and looks ready to train on as a 3YO after an impressive second in his1000m heat won by a handy type in COMPENSATION (59.50; 35.09). RIPLEY had plenty to offer coming from well off the pace with good work over the last 200m.
Other smart maiden trials included the 1000m winner LIGHTNING GLORY (61.86; 36.93), the fastest 845m heat winner RIGA (49.20; 34.82), PROBABILITY THEORY (51.70; 36.04), ARGYROS (50.70; 35.83) and DIJON AUTRE (50.09; 35.54). Eye catching efforts in these heats included VITTOZI, MISS JOY and CRATHIE KIRK.
The three open heats over 1000m were won by OCEANS GLORY (49.81; 34.51), SPARKINGLY (50.35; 35.27) and THE ESCAPE (50.08; 35.27) with each showing enough to be ready to perform in the right company.

WARWICK FARM September 4
Inside Grass; Soft 5
10 Heats – 2 x 1200m (1 Open; 1 C1/Maiden); 4 x 790m (3 Open; 1 Maiden); 4 x 786m (4 Maiden)
Classy trials from a pair worth following through the spring..
BEADMAN (Peter Snowden): Hard to miss the classy trial by this exciting prospect in his first trial since his big win in the Ken Russell at the Gold Coast in May. He jumped well but James McDonald took hold and allowed him to drift back to midfield while sitting three wide as the speedy SPARKLENGLITTER open up a four lengths lead. The leader came back to them over the last 200m and held on to win the 790m heat (45.82; 33.10) from the well performed HEADLEY GRANGE who was put under a ride to make ground from the turn. BEADMAN warmed to his work out wide to finish fourth with McDonald keeping him under a big hold, He looked full of class as he ran through the line while his stablemate BRAVEHEAT went out the back from the start and also impressed finishing strongly along the rail for third under a quiet ride.
Speedy mare Sparklenglitter leads all the way in a Warwick Farm trial on Thursday, running 45.82 for the 790m, beating Headley Grange and Braveheart with Beadman a close fourth. @tabcomau pic.twitter.com/y4ka0H2Ggp

PIER (Darren & Briar Weatherley): Classy Kiwi 6YO, a G1 winner as a 3YO in NZ, made an impact in his two starts at the Brisbane carnival with a G3 placing and a Listed win. He's an imposing gelding who covers plenty of ground, taking big strides as he surged to the line under an easy ride from Andrew Calder for an impressive second in his 790m heat won by the pacy MAZ KANATA (46.13; 32.91). It was a lovely piece of work from PIER over a distance well short of his best.
The fastest 790m trial was won by POINT SCORE (45.65; 32.60) in a heat where the late work of FLYING FOR FUN took the eye. There was plenty of depth in this heat with classy types AUTUMN BOY and EL CASTELLO enjoying conditioning work.
Maidens to keep an eye include TOMCAT FLOWER, MRS MAREE, TAXATION, MICRO MAGIC, PIERRO LAD and MY BELLA VISTA.
