TRIAL POINTERS
ROSEHILL September 9: Rarely does a Golden Slipper winner line up against a TJ Smith winner in a barrier trial. MARHOONA and BRIASA met in a 1000m heat on the course proper with the older sprinter BRIASA asserting his class with a workout that has him firmly on track to the $20 million Everest next month. The big grey, with the benefit of his first up trial win at Canterbury on August 16 behind him, jumped best and comfortably pulled his way to a three lengths lead after 400m. Tyler Schiller allowed him to track wide as he easily maintained his advantage to the finish (59.90; 33.28), being kept under a tight hold while MARHOONA was pushed along to take some ground off him over the last 200m. BRIASA has won seven of his 10 starts and might just be the best of our local sprinters this spring. Gosford Guineas winner DANCE TO THE BOOM was a standout winner of the fastest 1030m heat (61.73; 34.30), unleashing an impressive sprint to come from six lengths off the lead at 500m and win running away by 4.5 lengths untouched. Wide on the turn, her sectionals over the last 400m are a strong platform for her chances in coming fillies races. Other notable open heat winners over 1030m included the good mares OUR QUEEN (63.03; 34.37) and OH DIAMOND LIL (62.51; 35.42), both dominating their trials from the front. In the 900m heats runners to take the eye with their late work included MILES OF GLORY and PERFUMIST.
WYONG September 8: G1 winner GRINGOTTS controlled the speed in the open 1200m heat (71.57; 35.51), appreciating the good track conditions to record a comfortable win with Group performer ROYAL SUPREMACY a solid third. In the fastest 1000m heat (58.82; 34.84) the runner-up HIDDEN MOTIVE was never off the bit sharing the lead on the inside and could have won the trial easily if asked for a serious effort. This work backed up his impressive trial win at Gosford last month and ensures he will be strongly fancied to add to his good record when next produced. There were some nice efforts in the other 100m heats with BROADWAY BOUNCER and IMPOSANT taking the eye with their closing work. RIPLEY, a Too Darn Hot colt placed in both city starts last season, looks ready to train on as a 3YO after an impressive second in his1000m heat. He had plenty to offer coming from well off the pace with good work over the last 200m.
WARWICK FARM September 4: A classy 790m heat (45.82; 33.10) saw BRAVEHEAT go out the back from the start and impress finishing strongly along the rail for third under a quiet ride. The fastest 790m trial was won by POINT SCORE (45.65; 32.60) while maidens to keep an eye include PIERRO LAD.
RANDWICK September 2: G1 winner JOLIESTAR looks ready for a bold first-up performance after trialling nicely in a strong open heat over 1050m (64.39; 34.39), where she was unextended to finish third. Maidens looking primed for a good showing include the fast 1050m heat winner SHANGRI LA BOY (63.61; 34.89).
ROSEHILL August 28: Crack sprinter PRIVATE HARRY posted the fastest win in the seven 1030m heats (61.63; 34.34), doing it easily to hold an advantage from start to finish under a hold. In the 900m trials efforts that commanded attention included GIRIJAALA,
HAWKESBURY August 25: Group horses had the use of the course proper for two trials. In Heat 2 (800m) MARHOONA made her first appearance since her Golden Slipper win in March. She took advantage of the inside running to rail through on the turn to head off the leader, working to the line under a ride (47.62; 33.03) for a win that will bring her on. JEDIBEEL was another good sprinter to put in his best work over the closing stages. Maiden runners to impress included MILES OF GLORY.
WARWICK FARM August 22: The racy FINE WINE, an unraced Snitzel filly having her third trial, showed natural short course speed to win the fastest 740m heat by almost six lengths (43.22; 32.91).
CANTERBURY August 18: In Heat 3 (900m) for the Group horses top class grey BRIASA showed he is back better than ever, cruising through this heat for a soft win in faster time than the previous trial (56.22; 35.99) in an effort that is certain to improve his fitness. Among the better open heat winners was OUR QUEEN.
GOSFORD August 18: Exciting sprinter PRIVATE HARRY did all that was needed for a soft win in his 1000m heat (60.52; 35.34) in his first trial since his G1 Galaxy win in March. Had more than four lengths to spare at the finish under the easiest of rides while posting the quickest time in the six 1000m heats.
WARWICK FARM August 8: In his 900m heat (55.05; 35.71) quality sprinter JEDIBEEL worked within well himself.
GOSFORD August 7: Promising 3YO HIDDEN MOTIVE won the fastest 1000m heat (61.41; 36.26) with something in reserve and is one to follow in the early races for his age group.
