Former star Coolmore stallion wins broodmare title for second-straight year.
Coolmore Stud hoped the breakout 2023/24 season for daughters of Fastnet Rock would be the dawn of a new era for the former champion stallion, but Tom Magnier didn't dare imagine he would rise to the level he has this season.
The son of Danehill set a new Australian record last year when progeny of his daughters amassed $37,011,762 on Australian racetracks.
He has already readjusted that mark and with two days of the season to go horses out of his daughters have banked $37,387,394 for the racing year.
It is more than $9 million more than his nearest rival Redoute's Choice, a four-time winner of the broodmare award, whose sons and daughters have earned $28,423,084.
"Fastnet Rock has been an incredible stallion for a long time now and his legacy will live on for many years through his daughters," Magnier, the Coolmore Australia principal, said.
"For a broodmare sire to achieve in excess of $37 million in successive seasons is a phenomenal achievement and we're lucky to have him."
This season's results have come in a racing year when glamour mare Via Sistina is a long-odds-on favourite to become the first son or daughter of the former star sprinter to win the Champion Australian Racehorse award.
The standout performer of those out of Fastnet Rock mares has been Joliestar, a daughter of Zoustar and Jolie Bay, who won the Newmarket Handicap and Kingsford Smith Cup at Group 1 level and banked more than $2.8m for the season.
Fastnet Rock and Redoute's Choice have each had 322 winners from sons or daughters of their progeny, while Fastnet Rock has had a total of 518 wins to Redoute's Choice's 513.
Fastnet Rock, who won the Australian Champion Sire award in 2011/12 and 2014/15, was only retired from stud duty last year which has Magnier hopeful his second broodmare award will not be his last.
"We have made a conscious effort to collect as many of his daughters as we can and he has a number of promising two and three-year-olds that will carry the flag for him next season and beyond," Magnier said.
"The likes of Lilac (Justify), Arcora (Justify) and Agarwood (Wootton Bassett) were bred and raised here at Coolmore and we look forward to following them in the spring.
"When you go to the sales and you see a yearling out of a Fastnet Rock mare, you give it a big tick."
