A look into the pedigree of this year’s Quezette Stakes winner.
The Quezette Stakes contained some fillies who had already acquitted themselves well at a high level, but the storyline heading into the race was the progressive types stepping up to Group level for the first time.
A filly who fitted that profile won the $200,000 event, but not the one who commanded many headlines in the lead up to the race.
The Phillip Stokes-trained Ferivia finished too well for her more-fancied and regally-bred rivals, including the previously unbeaten pair Signature Scent and Scenic Point, in the 1100-metre event.
Ferivia held off $575,000 yearling My Gladiola, a daughter of I Am Invincible who won the Group 3 Blue Diamond Preview on debut, with a couple of daughters of Written Tycoon also among the beaten brigade.
The Quezette victory was Ferivia's second from three starts, having won at Murray Bridge on debut, while her only other appearance realised a half-length second to Saturday's Vain Stakes third placegetter Express Class.
Ferivia is the latest to carry the Brook family's white and green colours to victory for Stokes.
"We thought she'd taken good improvement, but she had to because this was a pretty good race, and it's great for the Brook family, who are big supporters of our stable," Stokes said after the race.
"I'm not sure what distance she's going to be (best at), is she a sprinter, is she going to get up further in trip? We'll just assess all that."
Bred at Strathwood Park, near Strathalbyn in South Australia, Ferivia is the eighth Group winner for former Darley stallion Astern, the sire of Group 1 winners Golden Mile and Affaire A Suivre who was last year exported to Turkey.
She is the third foal from the Not A Single Doubt mare Streetcar Express who had nine starts in South Australia with a couple of second placings the best results.
Her first foal Effline, a son of Strathwood Park stallion Terango, won a 1000m Charleville maiden on debut but was retired after four subsequent unplaced runs, while second foal Effusiv, a daughter of Pride Of Dubai, has had three starts with a Balaklava maiden win the best result.
After Ferivia, Streetcar Express had a filly by Castelvecchio then a colt by Rich Enuff and last year served by Flying Artie.
Streetcar Express was the third of nine named-foals from Blevic mare Streetcar Stella, who died late last year.
