A look into the family background of Saturday’s Spring Champion Stakes winner.
Attica got one back for the family with his win in Saturday's $2 million Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick.
There were no shortage of Group 1s for his sire, former superstar racehorse Lonhro, but his dam Savatiano was stripped of the one she 'won'.
The daughter of Street Cry was first over the line in the 2021 Canterbury Stakes, but was later disqualified after returning a positive swab.
That came 12 months after she beat home all bar The Bostonian in the same race, while she was also runner-up in an All Aged Stakes and finished third in the Tattersall's Tiara at Group 1 level.
All up, Savatiano raced 41 times for 12 wins, five of them at Group 2 level.
Attica carries the Godolphin blue colours that his mother wore and found his way to Joe Pride with the dispersal of horses after James Cummings' departure and Pride was thrilled to turn Attica into a Group 1-winning colt for Sheikh Mohammed's operation.
"I've been handed a beautiful horse by Godolphin and horses like this, they weren't on my doorstep a couple of years ago," Pride said.
"So it's nice to be working with quality and, yeah, it's a great result."
Attica is the first foal from Savatiano, who is the first foal from Redoute's Choice mare Retsina having proven a handy producer for Sheikh Mohammed's operation with Athiri and Vilana among her other products, along with Aleppo Pine.
After Attica, Savatiano had a colt by Palace Pier who has been named Sabates and is in the care of Ciaron Maher, while she last year had a colt by I Am Invincible before failing to get in-foal after a visit to Extreme Choice.
Attica became the 13th Group 1 winner for Lonhro, joining a list that includes Lindermann, who was also a winner at Randwick on Saturday, taking out the Group 3 Craven Plate.
