Pukekohe Picks - Tuesday, 15 October

Racecourse : Pukekohe.
Racecourse : Pukekohe.

Pukekohe Race 1
3 Janka

Very moderate 2100m maiden contest and not a high confidence betting race, where I've sided on Janka at odds. He was unsuited on a firmer track last start and racing out of his grade, now back in maiden company and a Heavy10 track looks much more suitable. His prior two performances on Heavy tracks are a much better guide for this, where he ran home well on inferior going on each occasion. Looks over the odds for mine.

Pukekohe Race 2
8 Bourbon Proof

Bourbon Proof's debut 2nd behind Belardi looks to be good form for this maiden contest. He looked to handle the Heavy conditions well enough that day and has since trialled well on a Heavy track since that debut effort. Looks the one they have to beat.

Pukekohe Race 3
8 Super Fly

Super Fly is a 4yo Ghibellines mare on debut for Conor & Sarah Fahy who has trialled well for this first-up assignment. Her latest trial placing at Waipa was in good time and she looked to be finding the line well on the Soft6 track. If she handles the Heavy going, I think she can run a race on debut.

Pukekohe Race 4
5 Juju Pop

I was with Juju Pop at odds last start and while we're not getting the same sort of price here she does look well placed to win back in R60 company. Her last start 2nd to Arjay's Flight has been franked, given he has won again since. I think the Heavy track will be okay given they've elected to stay at 1400m third-up.

Pukekohe Race 5
7 Levakia

Levakia has been very good in each of her three career starts, placing and running through the line strongly on each occasion. The blinkers coming back off is a good decision for mine as she looked to race keenly with them on for the first time last start. She may be one who would be better suited to the track drying out, however, she still looks the one to beat here.

Pukekohe Race 6
4 Lachie

Lachie was scratched from Rotorua Sunday in favour of running here. He comes into this off the back of a very strong yet eye-catching hit-out at the trials in September, where he was taking good late ground off subsequent race winner, Erin Go Bragh. Warren Kennedy rides first-up for Barbara Kennedy and the wide gate (13) doesn't look to be a negative with the forecasted track conditions.

I'll also be saving/speculating on Chasing Warrior, who trialled well on a Heavy track before flopping at Ruakaka first-up, worth giving a second chance at odds.

Pukekohe Race 7
9 Li Li

Li Li's first-up run at Tauranga was much better than it looked to the eye. For the majority of the straight she was either tightened for room or laying in under pressure and didn't look to balance up properly until her last 50m-100m. The blinkers now go on second-up and the Heavy track won't concern her. Best bet.

Pukekohe Race 8
2 Juwala

Extremely open race where I've landed with Juwala getting back on a Heavy surface. He was somewhat underwhelming on a Soft7 at Matamata last start, yet his prior runs on Heavy tracks had plenty of merit. The blinkers now go on for this and he should be peaking for this now having three runs under his belt this time in.

Pukekohe Race 9
3 Whiskey N' Rye

Whiskey N' Rye looks better suited than most to a testing Heavy track at Pukekohe (should that eventuate). He has recent race fitness and the majority of his racing on Heavy tracks of late should stand him in good stead for this.

Pukekohe Race 10
1 What A Charma

What A Charma hasn't set the world on fire since his 9.5L win on a very testing Heavy track at New Plymouth four starts back. I expect from the wide draw (11), Ngakau Hailey will push forward and look to dictate this race from the front. If the track is looking like a tired and testing Heavy track come the last, What A Charma might be best suited.
