Wingatui Picks - Thursday, 17 October

Racecourse : Wingatui (NZ)
Racecourse : Wingatui (NZ)

Wingatui Race 1
4 Taimate Staar

Taimate Staar was somewhat unlucky in her resuming run at Timaru, where she wasn't able to get a true crack at them up the fence. She looks to get similar conditions here second-up, while the step up to a mile should only aid her chances. Sam Weatherley jumps aboard for this and I think with even luck this race is within her reach.

Wingatui Race 2
12 Yoo Hoo Joy

Yoo Hoo Joy ran a very good race on debut here at Wingatui last month, having to shift ground multiple times in the straight whilst also racing in the inferior going closer to the fence. She now steps up to 1500m second-up, where she should also get a firmer surface to race on here. With natural improvement and better luck in running she should be hard to beat.

Wingatui Race 3
3 Pivotal Ten

Pivotal Ten ran up to a mark last start that would probably see her winning this race with a repeat effort. With a clean getaway, Pivotal Ten looks like the one who can lead and take all sorts of running down in this race.

Wingatui Race 4
8 Empress Suiko

Empress Suiko is first-up here since March without any public trials or jumpouts to speak of. She performed well last campaign behind some talented enough types. The wide draw (16) over 1200m here is the obvious concern, however, she will end up getting back off what looks a strong tempo regardless. If she's anywhere near her best for this resuming run, she could be the one coming over the top late.

Wingatui Race 5
2 Hidalgo

Hidalgo looks a great each way bet for mine despite the fact he's stepping up in grade for this. He maps to lead this race as he likes, as I don't see a whole lot of pressure in this race. If he can dictate from the front he can give a great sight at a nice each way price.

Wingatui Race 6
8 Hasstobeyou

Hasstobeyou's first two runs this campaign have had plenty of merit. She gets into this race with just 50kg on her back after Sienna Brown's claim and should be trailing/3-back the fence from gate 1. Looks to get a very good opportunity to win this.

Wingatui Race 7
3 Bouyant

Bouyant is back from Australia where he didn't fire/measure up over there. He's subsequently come back as a R72 horse off the back of a mediocre run of form and finds himself in much weaker company than when he left in 2022. If Sabin Kirkland has him back anything close to the form he was showing before he left, he simply wins this race. Watch the market on the day, could be a good guide to where he is at.

Wingatui Race 8
3 Albazinga

Albazinga had been performing consistently well until being brought undone by a testing Heavy10 at the end of last preparation. She draws well for this resuming run and the drying conditions should be to her liking. Very open race with many of these resuming, she looks the one who will get every chance to find something close to her best.

Wingatui Race 9
3 Gangsta Granny

Gangsta Granny maps to lead this race as she likes and she looks to get a very similar setup to when she won two starts back with Denby-Rose Tait aboard and claiming 3kg. I expect to see her out in front and bowling along and should give a sight.

Wingatui Race 10
3 Hugs

Hugs is first-up here since February without any public trials or jumpouts to speak of. She has a strong turn of foot on her day and should get the right run to produce it here whilst also getting 3kg off her back with Ruvanesh Muniandy's claim. Happy to side with her in what is an open race to finish the day at Wingatui.
