New Plymouth Race 1
7 Gioia Magic
Gioia Magic (#7) produced her best effort to date when finishing 6th at Taupo last start. The Alexanders bring her south to a very thin maiden, and 2000m on a better surface looks ideal for her. Maps to trail Later Boy and get every chance.
New Plymouth Race 2
2 Black Sea
Black Sea (#2) was disappointing first-up at Hawera on a testing track, where he was under pressure a long way out. He'll appreciate getting back on top of the ground second-up. Expect him to land back of midfield from the middle draw and look to work into it late.
New Plymouth Race 3
10 Ebony Gem
Ebony Gem (#10) is a 4yo Snitzel mare who overdid it in front on debut at Te Rapa before stopping sharply. She resumes here, and her recent synthetic trial was sound. From a low draw she maps to get a soft sit just off a hot speed under Joe Doyle. An improved showing wouldn't surprise.
New Plymouth Race 4
9 Sweet Talkin Gal
TIP OF THE DAY
Sweet Talkin Gal (#9) was excellent at Ellerslie last start for 3rd after sustaining a wide mid-race move before the turn. She should be able to settle much handier here from the low draw under Jasmine Fawcett, and in this company she'll take plenty of stopping.
New Plymouth Race 5
12 The Dirty Dee
The Dirty Dee (#12) is a 3yo Derryn filly on debut for Robbie Patterson. The improvement between her last two trials was notable, coinciding with the blinkers going on, they stay on for raceday. Craig Grylls rides from the inside draw. Looks hard to beat.
New Plymouth Race 6
2 Charmer
Charmer (#2) was only okay first-up in stronger company at Ellerslie after being slowly away, but she did close off reasonably well late. She'll be fitter now, and this is a major drop back in grade. With natural improvement, she should prove difficult to hold out.
New Plymouth Race 7
8 Leinster
Leinster (#8) is best forgiven for his first-up run at Waverley, where he was forced to check off heels in the straight and lost all chance. Blinkers go on second-up, and he maps to get back off what looks a strong tempo. If they overdo it in front, he's one who can be storming over the top late.
New Plymouth Race 8
2 High Country
High Country (#2) stayed on well first-up at Te Aroha, grinding to the line to finish 4th. That was an ideal platform heading to 1800m second-up, which looks much more his go. Even field, but on his day he has more ability than most of these.
