All Alston

Up until Sunday, Brian Fothergill had won almost every major event on the coursing circuit – except the coveted Waterloo Cup.

A new addition to the kennels, Alston, changed that when he claimed victory in the prestigious event.

"This race is the holy grail of coursing events, and I still can't believe we won it," trainer Brian Fothergill said.

Fothergill purchased Alston after spotting his potential at Shepparton, where despite a loss of concentration, his raw talent shone through.

"The turn of foot he showed was unbelievable," Fothergill recalled.

Alston adapted to coursing with ease in his debut season, being defeated only once across nine series.

"When he first trialled at Longwood, he was given the nickname 'The Professional'," Fothergill said.

Success on the coursing circuit is nothing new to Fothergill, one of the best to grace his kennels was Barracuda Fozz.

"Alston is still a length off Barracuda Fozz," he admitted.

And how do you celebrate a Waterloo Cup triumph? With family, of course but after the dogs are done.

With the coursing season now complete, Fothergill remains undecided on what's next Alston.
