Rising Sun winner Fate Awaits will again have to overcome a back row draw if he is to add another Group 1 to his growing resume in Saturday night’s Group 1 Queensland Derby at Albion Park.
The race looks one of the strongest derbies seen in Brisbane in recent years with four runners coming through the Rising Sun.
They had varied luck at the barrier draw including Fate Awaits who again drew on the second line after coming from there to beat older rivals a fortnight ago for his third win at the elite level.
On that night he drew the inside and enjoyed a soft run before taking advantage of the sprint lane whereas the Derby sees him start with two horses inside him so a tougher passage is likely.
He did create history in that Rising Sun however as the first three-year-old winner so the performance can't be diminished and he is suited back against his own age group.
He has a definite affinity with Albion Park - winning eight of 10 attempts at the circuit – and he possesses a knack of showing his best on a Group 1 night.
The Rising Sun runner to have fared best in the Derby draw is Hesitate who came up with the number one marble.
He only beat one home in Rising Sun but that was his lone defeat in four starts this time in and he was back on track last week when he pushed to the front from a wider barrier and was too good.
He has the gate speed to take advantage of the ace draw and that gives him every chance.
Kiwi Rubira cops a wide draw to follow his midfield effort in the Rising Sun but beat Fate Awaits in their two prior clashes and has the class to win if he can overcome the barrier.
Jacks Ultimate Fury was very good when third in the Rising Sun from the same barrier he gets in the Derby and he put together a string of wins prior so looks an each way player as does Mac Bon who has won two of his past four starts despite some tough draws so will enjoy a better barrier.
Top class Kiwi filly Captains Mistress looks good enough to overcome a back row draw and win the Queensland Oaks.
She has been terrific in winning her three starts in the sunshine state, last time taking advantage of the ace draw to lead and beat older male rivals by 5m in the Rising Sun consolation.
She overcame barriers on the second row to win her previous two outings, racing deep but proving too strong from many of these rivals in the Redcliffe Oaks two back.
She is big on class and with clear air will be hard to stop.
Soho Americano is back in winning form having pushed to the front from a wider barrier last week before toughing it out.
That saw her unbeaten at Albion Park and took her record at the distance to five from five. A good draw should see her in the finish.
Manhatten Chick is progressing strongly and made it three wins from her last four when she came from the back row to beat some of these rivals in the South East Oaks last start. She must be respected from the ace draw.
Gunna Reload starts from the same barrier she had in Sydney last week when she led to beat the boys and she has measured up to the top fillies before.
NSW Oaks winner Cool And Classy will have been set to peak again for this and owns an impressive strike rate at Albion Park.

Brilliant mare Eye Keep Smiling can stretch her winning streak to 10 when she chases a second straight win in The Golden Girl later on the program.
The Sydney five-year-old has risen to the top of the tree of mares in this country in the 12 months since landing her maiden Group 1 victory in this race last year.
She had to work from a wider barrier last week and looked under threat in the straight but drew on all her strength and class to stretch her winning streak to nine.
She faces many of the same rivals and that looked their best chance to beat her as she draws to enjoy better favours tonight so is hard to tip against.
WA mare Steno has been ultra consistent through her eastern mission, recording six straight placings without winning. Four of those have been behind Eye Keep Smiling including last week's head defeat from a back row draw.
She won't find it easy to turn the tables but could push her rival again.
Tay Tay worked from a tough barrier last week but draws the ace tonight. She can be competitive from there.
