Wathnan looking to get Damysus back on track in Deauville

Connections of Damysus will be hoping to see him firmly back on track when he heads to the Prix Nureyev on Saturday.

Carrying the colours of Wathnan Racing, John and Thady Gosden's striking three-year-old was sent off a 16/1 chance for the Epsom Derby on the back of his second-place finish behind Pride Of Arras in the Dante Stakes at York.

However, having got upset in the stalls, Damysus failed to show his true potential in the Epsom Classic, failing to beat a rival home and ultimately finished a well-beaten last of eighteen runners.

With his sights lowered to Listed level back over a mile and a quarter, connections are hopeful he can show what he is truly capable of when heading to Deauville on Saturday.

Richard Brown, Racing Manager for owners Wathnan Racing, said: "He was obviously disappointing in the Derby, but he got upset at the start and ended up kicking the stalls and ended up coming back with some fairly nasty cuts and scratches on his legs which wouldn't have helped his cause either.

"I'm not sure the ground at Epsom was ideal for him either so we've given him a break and plenty of time. We've always been pointing towards this, which is the last opportunity for the year for him to go up against his own age group and he's been reported to be in good form, so we're looking forward to getting him back on track.

"We were always going to come back in trip. You wouldn't want to judge on his Derby performance whether he was going to get further, and I don't think he's short of speed.

"We'll see how we get on here and then we can decide about trip going forwards."

The three-year-old son of Frankel could be joined by Wathnan Racing's Diego Ventura, who also remains in contention for the Listed prize following his staying on second behind the Golden Eagle-bound Seagulls Eleven in the Thoroughbred Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

"Diego Ventura will need a bit of juice in the ground," said Brown. "We'll need plenty of it. James (Doyle) is going to ride Underwriter on Thursday in the sales race there and then we'll have a chat about the ground.

"We thought we'd try him up in trip. He's not bred for it, being by Mehmas out of a Kodiac mare but he's always doing his best work late on.

"He's definitely better with some give in the ground. It will be an experiment but it's one I think hopefully will work. He's super consistent and has never been out of the first four.

"He's been a really solid servant for us."
