Visiting jockey Will Price enjoyed a dream debut in the country when he piloted The Star to victory Class 4A – 1020m sprint on the No. 2 track at Sungai Besi today.
Son of former MRA jockey Simon Price, the Australian overcame a wide draw on the Hallowed Crown six-year-old to take the lead on settling down and staved off a determined challenge from Banker's Natural to win by 3/4 length.
A former Melbourne champion apprentice (2020/21 season) and winner of more than 240 races, Price rode at the final two meetings in Singapore last October but drew a blank.
However, he has better luck this time around.
"Very happy," said Price as he dismounted from The Star . "It made the trip worthwhile. A great experience.
"I had a nice horse (The Star). Great to be here and hopefully I can come up here more often."
On racing on the No 2 track, he said: "It's alright. Obviously it has got a short run in to the first turn. But it's very even, smooth corner and a short run in to the finish."
Price, however, failed to strike again in his remaining six rides, finishing third twice on So We Fight and Guru Fight.
It was disappointing for punters, and Price, to see the heavily-backed Hypeman and Vaolis finish out of the money.
Hypeman, a debut winner three weeks ago, could not overcome a wide draw and had to race wide all the way, eventually finishing beating one home in the Max Two Stakes over 1200m.
Valios was given every chance by Price, tracking the pacemaker Aniki before ending up fifth to Latin Legend in the main event of the day, the Supreme B race over 1600m.
Purchased for A$80,000 as an unraced two-year-old and shipped to Singapore in 2020, The Star only made his racing debut as a five-year-old last year and was placed just once in five starts at Kranji before finding his way to Kuala Lumpur.
Under trainer Lawson Moy, The Star won his local debut and has been a model of consistency since, winning five times and was placed thrice in eight runs.
