Thunderous produced a blistering turn of foot just when it mattered to turn defeat into victory in the main event of the day, the Class 3 – 1200m sprint, at Sungai Besi today.
Throughout the running, right up to the 300m mark, the favourite did not look like winning and struggled in the wake of the pace set by Yes Man who led from Hurricane and Our Secret Weapon.
Thunderous was in midfield – in seventh place – and some ten lengths for the leader at the 800m.
Yes Man led into the straight from Hurricane and Our Secret Weapon, with Popeyethesailorman and Thunderous closing the gap behind them.
Yes Man was still two lengths clear of Popeyethesailorman at the 200m. Although having moved up to third spot, Thunderous was still some six lengths from the leader and yet to get off the ground.
But shortly after, Thunderous began to charge. As soon as Poeeyethesailorman collared Yes Man at the 100m, Thunderous loomed large on their outside and swept past them to win by 1-1/4 lengths. Popeyethesailorman just edged out Yes Man for second.
"He (Thunderous) didn't like the going but his form was good," said winning jockey Marc Lerner who partnered Thunderous to back-to-back wins in May and June.
"The pace was on early but he showed that he was the best horse today."
It was the third win in the country for Thunderous, who had a win in 10 starts in Australia. He ran fourth to Pacific Victory in the 4YO Sprint Championship (1200m) and was second to Graphjet Express in the A Plus Selangor Silver (1300m) in his last start.
"Thunderous is a very nice progressive horse," said trainer Simon Dunderdale.
"At the 300m, he had a lot work to do but won well in the end with the help of a great ride from Lerner."
