After a recent switch of trainers, Golden Pegasus bounced back to winning form when he won the Supreme B contest over 1600m at Sungai Besi in his second start for Siva Kumar Subramaniam.
It wasn't a top-tier event but fans of the Star Turn gelding would be hoping that the success today could the start of a rebound to the very top.
After all, Golden Pegasus was one of the stars of 2024 with victories in the two big races for four-year-olds: the Selangor Turf Club 4YO Sprint (1200m) and the Simar Gemilang Cup (1600m).
The Australian gelding also ran second to Antipodean in the Selangor Gold Cup (1600m) and third to Cheval Blanc in the Piala Emas Sultan Selangor (2000m) last year.
His form this season – after resuming from a four-month layoff – has been subpar by his own standard although he did win a Supreme A race over 1600m back in May when he only had to account for five rivals.
Golden Pegasus's first run for Siva was in the incident-packed Selangor Gold Cup last month when he came from a long way to finish fifth to Lucky Magic.
Yudanyl Aify, who rode him for the first time last time out, had Golden Pegasus much closer to the lead in the running today.
Aniki set the pace from Pacific Warrior and Always A Gentleman followed by Golden Pegasus racing on the inside of Pacific Star.
Aniki led into the straight just ahead of Pacific Warrior with Golden Pegasus closing in third just two lengths away from the leader. Always A Gentleman was also handy on the rails.
It took a while for Golden Pegasus to hit top gear and when he eventually did, swoop past Aniki in the final 200m to win drawing away by 1-1/4 lengths.
Always A Gentleman, a former Group 1 winner in Brazil who was having his second run in the country, beat Aniki for second.
Golden Pegasus covered the 1600m journey in 1min 34.91secs, 1.02 second outside Platinum Emperor's course record set two months ago.
"His ran well in the Selangor Gold Cup and has improved, so I knew he would run a good race today," said Siva.
"He looked fantastic today and after this win, I am sure he will improve further," said Aify.
