A resurgent Golden Pegasus stole the crown from Antipodean when the pair met for the second time in the Sports Toto Supreme Challenge Cup (1400m) at Sungai Besi today.
The two of them were the star performers in the age group events last year, with Antipodean taking out the 3YO Pacific Cup and New Zealand Bloodstock 3YO Trophy, and Golden Pegasus winning the Selangor Turf Club 4YO Sprint and 4YO Safar Gemilang Cup.
Antipodean went on to capture the Selangor Gold Cup (1600m) before winning the Sports Toto Supreme Challenge Cup in which Golden Pegasus started a firm second favourite behind Antipodean but could manage only a fourth placing.
Golden Pegasus has spent much of this season trying to regain his best form although he did beat five others to win a Supreme A race over 1600m earlier in the year.
And it took a recent change of trainer to Siva Kumar for the Star Turn gelding to hit top gear again.
Golden Pegasus' first outing under Siva was a fifth to Lucky Magic in the Selangor Gold Cup in September, when he had to overcome interference midway through the race but finishing strongly.
The six-year-old stepped up on that run to win a Supreme B race over the same trip last month and the stage was set for a rematch with Antipodean in the Sports Toto Supreme Challenge Cup today.
This time, this season's Tunku Gold Cup (1200m) winner Noah Khan was thrown into the mix and they started as the first three favourites.
The field went off to an even start with Pacific Warrior taking a narrow lead early from Cavalry, Emerald Lisi, Filial Dragon, Noah Khan and Sacred Buddy racing in a tight bunch.
The field eventually spread out and Pacific Waarior led by 1-1/2 lengths from Emerald Lisi and Cavalry at the 800m. Then came Filial Dragon and Noah Khan and Golden Pegasus racing on the rails on the inside of Sacred Buddy. Antipodean was second last at this point.
Pacific Warrior led into the straight from Emerald Lisi, Cavalry, Filial Dragon and Golden Pegasus. The rest of the field followed in a tight bunch. Antipodean was still second last, sandwiched between runners.
Pacific Warrior battled to hold on to this lead but was eventually collared by Cavalry at the 200m. Emerald Lisi, Noah Khan, Golden Peagsus and Antipodean were stretched across the track chasing the front two.
Cavalry took a half-length lead at the 100m but Golden Pegasus quickly pounced on him with Noah Khan and Antipodean also looming large on the outside.
Golden Pegasus hit the front with 50m to go and cleared away to win by 1-1/2 lengths from Antipodean. Cavalry battled on for third.
"I said after his last win that he (Golden Pegasus) will improve after the run and now he has shown his true ability," said Aify who has ridden the gelding in his last three starts.
"He has been working well in training so I was confident about the race today.
"He ran very well and I was very happy with him.
"I am now looking forward to the Piala Emas Sulangor (2000m) with him."
