It was a fifth Group 1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis - Bayerisches Zuchtrennen Ausgetra for Godolphin, who landed the contest courtesy of Saeed Bin Suroor’s Tornado Alert.
Saeed Bin Suroor is no stranger to success at Munich, having won the race in 2001 with Kutub, and more recently combining with Oisin Murphy for success with the globetrotting Benbatl's triumph in 2018.
Whilst Tornado Alert had shown high potential at his previous three starts as a three-year-old, victory had proven elusive – he ran creditably for fourth in the 2000 Guineas Stakes (Gr.1) on seasonal reappearance, failed to handle to step up in trip to finish sixth in The Derby (Gr.1), before being a narrowly held second in the 2000m Hampton Court Stakes (Gr.3) at Royal Ascot.
On this occasion, Murphy opted for prominent tactics, tracking the frontrunning Atoso closely throughout prior to Tornado Alert launching a challenge down the centre of the course with two-and-a-half furlongs remaining. The colt assumed the lead at the two furlong marker, at which point Francis-Henri Graffard's Map Of Stars attempted to rally. On very soft going, Tornado Alert found more in the closing stages and stayed on authoritatively to score by two-and-a-half lengths over Map Of Stars. The other three-year-old in the race, German trained Lazio, was held by one-and-a-quarter lengths in third.
In an interview with World Pool following the race, Murphy said: "We were uncertain, but he loved it. He's by Too Darn Hot, out of a Kingmambo mare, he ran very well in the Epsom Derby, he was second at Royal Ascot, today he came to Munich, and he was brilliant."
Saeed bin Suroor, via godolphin.com, added: "Tornado Alert won well and I am really pleased for him. He has run well every time this season, and his second at Royal Ascot last time was a good piece of form. I was a little worried about the ground when the rain came, but he had no problem with conditions today.
"We will take him home to Newmarket and see how he comes out of this over the next few days before deciding where to go next. A mile and a quarter is his best trip, so we will look for more races over this distance."
Tornado Alert's success continued an excellent weekend for Too Darn Hot, who enjoyed two Black Type winners on Saturday at Ascot and Gowran Park. Godolphin's homebred is out of Bint Almatar, who also produced Australian-trained Group 1 winner Just Fine.
