Dwyer hoping Asfoora can make it second time lucky in King George Stakes

Henry Dwyer is hopeful that his star mare Asfoora can avenge her narrow defeat in last year’s King George Stakes when she returns to Glorious Goodwood for the Friday feature.

The Australian raider enjoyed a successful campaign on British soil last season, producing a memorable victory in the King Charles III Stakes before creditable efforts at Goodwood and York.

Returning to England as a six-year-old, Asfoora shaped with plenty of encouragement when beaten two lengths in fifth in this year's renewal of the King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot, leaving connections hopeful that she can go one spot better at Glorious Goodwood on Friday.

Dwyer said: "Hopefully we can go one better this year, that's the plan anyway!

"The conditions of the race are a lot more suitable this year and she has a bit less without the Group 1 penalty she had last year and the main opposition, Time For Sandals and Big Mojo, they both have quite a bit of weight for their age and are dropping back from six furlongs to five furlongs.

"So, I think the race sets up well for us, it's just a case of whether she can find her best and if she finds it, I think she goes very close to winning and if she's for some reason a length or two below her best I still think she will still be right there.

"She's nice and relaxed again after Ascot and we gave her two weeks out in the paddock after that to help her settle in a bit more and she seems in a good space.

"I think there's definitely more to come and I do think she will improve again in three weeks' time for York but she's on an upwards plain and is going the right way and hopefully she is in very good shape for this race."

The daughter of Flying Artie was denied a short-head by Mick Appleby's Breeders' Cup hero Big Evs twelve months ago, but Dwyer believes it's his turn to claim glory on the Sussex Downs this week.

He said: "We had some great fun with Mick (Appleby) and Paul and Rachael (Teasdale) and it would be filthy if their colours beat us again, but I think it's our turn."
