‘He could easily make an impact off an opening mark of 75’ - Sam King’s daily wagers

Sam King landed a 2pt 11/8 winner yesterday and returns with four selections on Friday.

The booking of Danny Tudhope by Ed Dunlop for his Arundel makes plenty of appeal at Thirsk this evening, with the consistent three-year-old looking like he holds excellent claims in the finale at 8.10.

Tudhope has been operating at a 30% strike rate over the last fourteen days and has an impressive 35% rate at Thirsk this year, with eight winners from just 23 rides for a £1 level stakes profit of +£14.83 at the Yorkshire venue. He's also four from fifteen for the Newmarket-based handler over the last five years.

A consistent and steadily progressive three-year-old, Arundel has done well since switched to handicap company over ten furlongs, winning once and filling the runner-up spot on a further three occasions.

His Newmarket second in July took a boost when the third-place horse, who was ultimately beaten five lengths that day, went on to win next time out at Windsor before finding a Racing League handicap too much last night, while the winner looked progressive and was having just his second outing over the ten-furlong trip.

It was a similar story at Yarmouth last time out for Arundel, who looked as though pegging back the longtime leader Alive Again in the final furlong only to be denied half a length in the closing stages. The winner was stepping up to a mile and a quarter for the first time on his handicap debut and ought to be a fairly short price to follow-up in a Newmarket race tomorrow evening.

Ed Dunlop looks to have found a nice opportunity up north to get his gelded son of Make Believe back to winning ways and with further progress possible in the first-time visor, he gets a confident vote to defy a 1lb higher mark this evening.

2pt Win – Arundel

Odds – 11/8

Flowerhead looks to have an excellent chance on the figures in the Listed St Hugh's Stakes at Newbury this afternoon but she's short enough in the market, so the sole bet from the Berkshire venue comes in the shape of Warrren Greatrex's Dark Alley, who looks interesting now stepping into nursery company in the opener (3.05.)

A well-backed runner-up at Windsor in June, Dark Alley readily went one spot better when found a weak opening at Bath last month, travelling strongly off the pace before seeing out the five and a half furlongs strongly on quick ground.

There's no doubt he'll need to improve on that form, but he gives off the impression that there could be plenty more to come now stepping up into stronger company, while it's tough to assess the strength of his Windsor second. The winner, Our Cody, lost her action when sent off just 8/1 for the Alice Keppel Fillies' Conditions Stakes at Glorious Goodwood but it's interesting that connections have opted to throw her into the aforementioned St Hugh's Stakes later on the card.

It's likely he bumped into a fairly decent type that day at Windsor and with both the track and extra half a furlong expected to suit; Dark Alley could easily make an impact off an opening mark of 75 for a local team that are no strangers to having winners here.

1pt Win – Dark Alley

Odds – 11/2

I certainly will not be awarded top marks for originality with my final two selections but both Charming Whisper (7.30) and Monastry (5.15) look to have every chance of finding the winners' enclosure up at racing headquarters this evening.

The former represents a small trainer in rude health at the moment, with three winners from his last seven runners, while the booking of in-form 7lb apprentice Ashley Lewis, who himself is operating at a 29% strike rate over the last fortnight, also strengthens this one's claims.

Charming Whisper looked as good as ever when carrying 10st 2lb to victory over course and distance a week ago, travelling smoothly at the rear of the field before battling on strongly up the hill. He's been put up 4lb for that success but is effectively 3lb lower here with Ashley Lewis taking off the valuable 7lb.

Philip Mcbride's four-year-old is clearly on good terms with himself at present and can complete a quickfire course and distance double.

Earlier on the card, Monastry should appreciate this stiff seven furlongs following two decent efforts in maiden/novice company.

A son of St Mark's Basilica, T J Kent's juvenile caught the eye when fourth at Haydock on debut before keeping on well from off the pace to fill the same position at Yarmouth next time out.

I suspect jockey George Wood will try to ride him more handily this evening with that experience under his belt, while the return to this sounder surface should also be in his favour.

1pt Win – Charming Whisper

Odds – 6/4

1pt Win – Monastry

Odds – 15/8
