King’s best bets - 1st September 2025

Sam King is back with two selections on Monday following a double at Brighton yesterday.

We head back to Brighton for our first selection, where the consistent and in-form Starsong could have what it takes to regain the winning run in the six-furlong handicap at 3.50.

The Mick Appleby-trained sprinter has been in fine form this season, finding the frame on four consecutive starts before a comfortable one-length success over course and distance early last month.

Despite failing to find the winners' circle on her next outing, she produced an effort that proved she remained in fine form by finishing fourth in a similar handicap off this mark at Epsom last time.

The return to Brighton looks like an interesting angle given that she's one from one over course and distance and it might be that a track like this on decent ground just suits her running style.

Alistair Rawlinson has a good draw to work with in gate four and off just 3lb higher than when winning snugly here last month, she gets the vote ahead of the hat-trick-seeking You Are Everything, who lacks course experience and is up in the weights.

1pt Win – Starsong

Odds – 3/1

Over at Windsor, Flying Comet looks to hold obvious claims in the opening nursery at 4.30.

Trained by the in-form duo of Simon and Ed Crisford, Flying Comet made a promising debut despite being turned over at odds-on when third at Nottingham in June before readily getting off the mark over six furlongs at Chepstow next time out.

It was somewhat slightly disappointing that he returned the beaten favourite under a penalty in a Thirsk novice in July but that now looks potentially very smart form, with the winner Lifeplan, who was in receipt of 10lb that day, going on the land the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes at York on his next outing.

He once again lost little in defeat when finishing fifth in a valuable sales event at Deauville last month, racing keenly in the early stages before keeping on steadily late on over six and a half furlongs. The winner that day looked like a high-class prospect and it wouldn't be surprising if he ended up a Group 1 performer.

Dropping back half a furlong this evening should suit and off an opening rating of 86, Simon and Ed Crisford's talented son of Havana Grey can make a winning nursery debut.

2pt Win – Flying Comet

Odds - Evs
