Amateur rider David Maxwell has called time on his riding career after suffering a fourth back injury in a fall during the Foxhunters’ Chase at Aintree’s Grand National meeting.
A familiar figure in hunter chases and pointing circles, Maxwell partnered 75 winners in Britain and one in Ireland. Though his biggest success came abroad - in the 2018 Grade 3 Prix Morgex at Auteuil on Cat Tiger - he was best known to British racegoers for his regular appearances in big races, competing against the top professionals, and his commitment to campaigning a large string under Rules.
He also enjoyed victories on his occasional forays across the Channel, riding four winners from just 18 rides in France, at Auteuil, Angers and Fontainebleau.
As well as being a two-time amateur champion, Maxwell enjoyed much success in the business sphere, being the founder and CEO of construction company DPK.
Maxwell will now disperse his sixteen British- and Irish-trained horses at a special sale in October, bringing the curtain down on a long-standing presence in domestic racing. However, he will continue to race horses in France, including the unbeaten four-year-old hurdler Lascar Du Mathin and Mombasa, both trained by Noel George and Amanda Zetterholm.
