Sam King is back with two selections on Tuesday.
Beverley hosts the sole turf action on the flat on Tuesday and although there are a handful of interesting contests, the best two wagers of the day come from the all-weather this evening at Southwell.
Nurseries can be tricky at this time of year as it's often tough to gauge what horses have achieved as they step into handicap company for the first time against those with a more exposed profile. That said, I've been waiting for Aleen to step up in trip, which she does in the Class 5 nursery at 5.30.
Trained by Sir Mark Prescott in the colours of Miss Rausing, Aleen has run three solid races in defeat thus far without looking particularly progressive.
However, all of that could be set to change now that she steps beyond seven furlongs for the first time in her career. A daughter of Study Of Man, she is a half-sister to a twelve-furlong all-weather winner and although we might not see the best of her until next year, I suspect she has what it takes to make an impact off an opening mark of 71 now switched to an artificial surface for the first time.
The booking of Luke Morris for the first time is a plus and with further progress on the cards, she gets the vote to score on her switch to nurseries.
1pt Win – Aleen
Odds – 7/2
The second division of the five-furlong handicap at Southwell this evening looks like a competitive affair, with Muker requiring respect from the head of the weights, while Alligator Alley looks interesting as a well-treated two-time course and distance scorer.
Despite the aforementioned pair requiring consideration, neither may have what it takes to lay a glove on Mon Na Slieve, who shaped as though a return to winning ways was on the horizon when fifth in a much warmer five-furlong handicap at York's Ebor meeting last time out.
A winner off 79 on the turf at Ayr earlier in the season, Mon Na Slieve has spent his time since operating off a higher mark in tougher company. He still remains on a rating of 84, but with talented apprentice Jack Callan in the saddle to take off 5lb, he's effectively off his last winning mark tonight.
He should get a nice early position against the near side rail from stall eight, especially as one who likes to race prominently, while it's interesting that the blinkers that have been worn on his last six starts have been replaced by cheekpieces here.
1pt Win - Mon Na Slieve
Odds – 4/1
