Karl Burke’s excellent time of things on the Rowley Mile continued when Hankelow showed a gritty attitude to make virtually all of the running in the Emirates Autumn Stakes.
Just weeks after Boiling Point landed the Cambridgeshire and Zeus Olympus maintained his unbeaten record; the colours of Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum were back in the Newmarket winners' enclosure for Karl Burke and Clifford.
An impressive winner over seven furlongs on debut at York, Hankelow suffered a first defeat when going down by the narrowest of margins in the Listed Flying Scotsman Stakes at Doncaster last month.
However, with the step up to a mile expected to suit, Karl Burke's two-year-old was sent off the 5/2 market leader to handle the rise to Group 3 level.
Under a positive Clifford Lee ride, the son of Night Of Thunder found plenty coming out of the dip to make virtually all of the running from Al Zanati, who pulled ferociously throughout in the hands of William Buick. The winning margin was a length and a quarter, with Al Zanati emerging with huge credit back in second ahead of Glacius.
"He's a beautiful horse with a great mind on him as well," said Burke.
"He's only going to get better, and I think he will be better on a better track and with a bit more juice in the ground.
"It was heads up, heads down at Doncaster (when beaten a nose by Roger Varian's Avicenna in the Flying Scotsman Stakes), but he was a little stop-start for two or three weeks before that and I think that is what got him beat.
"The step up in trip has suited him well here and he has a fantastic attitude. You only have to watch him in the prelims to see he is a very relaxed horse, and I'm delighted."
On future plans, Burke added: "He's good and whether he's quick enough for the Guineas will be the thing or whether we have to step him up in trip. We've got plenty of time to think about that and it's unbelievable to be lucky enough to keep having these nice horses."
