King’s best bets - 25th October 2025

Sam King landed 13/2 and 11/4 winners yesterday and returns with three selections on this super Saturday.

Cheltenham continues its opening October meeting, while the presence of both Doncaster, which stages the closing Group 1 flat race of the British season, and Newbury makes it an action-packed Saturday for punters.

The opening William Hill Each Way Extra Novices' Limited Handicap Chase at Cheltenham looks as competitive as any contest this afternoon but I'm keen to side with Newton Tornado, who was consistent over hurdles last season.

Having readily gotten off the mark over hurdles at Ffos Las when last seen, it's interesting that connections kept him away from handicap company over the smaller obstacles and he looks like the type to do better over fences this year.

The form of his maiden hurdle outings is nothing to write home about, but the Rebecca Curtis team do a tremendous job with their staying chasers and it's obvious that this has been his plan all along.

He finished a good second on his sole outing to this venue over hurdles and with the switch to chasing combined with this step up in trip expected to suit, he looks worth side with off an opening mark of 121.

Newton Tornado – 1pt Win

Odds – 7/1

In the William Hill's Final One Standing Novices' Hurdle (1.45), Conman John makes plenty of appeal for a training combination that just look to be going from strength to strength.

Trained by the Lucinda Russell and Michael Scudamore team, he was in need of every yard of the two-mile five-furlong trip when making a winning hurdling debut at Kelso, shaping as though staying hurdling would be his game this season.

Going up to three miles at a track like Cheltenham should play to his strengths, while the form of his impressive point-to-point success has been well franked by the second, Daydream Nation, who effortlessly pulled sixteen lengths clear to land a Gowran Park maiden hurdle recently.

At the current prices, he looks a cracking each-way bet.

Conman John – 1pt Each-way

Odds – 7/1

As often is the case, the BetVictor Horris Hill Stakes at Newbury (3.10) looks sure to be a testing affair and I'm not convinced that will suit market leader Time To Turn, who reappears quickly back down in grade having struggled in the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere.

With that in mind, Stellar Sunrise might prove the one to side with. Trained by the in-form handler Andrew Balding, this juvenile son of Space Blues has done little wrong this season, getting off the mark in maiden company at Glorious Goodwood before relishing the step up to seven to land a competitive nursery at York's Ebor meeting in August.

He's yet to meet any real kind of give in the ground but he's a hardy sort that looks to be progressing quickly and it wouldn't be at all surprising if he handled it, while it's interesting that Balding had him pencilled in to run in the Tattersalls Stakes (ruled out due to a cut leg) at Newmarket earlier in the month.

This will require another step up but he's going in the right direction and might prove capable of continuing the winning streak.

Stellar Sunrise – 1pt Win

Odds – 4/1
