Mega Upset in Japan Derby

The 91st Tokyo Yushun will go into the history books as one of the biggest upsets.

The winner was Danon Decile, ridden by 56 year old Norihiro Yokoyama (one of his sons was riding Urban Chic) and trained by Shogo Yasuda who thus won his first G1.

Danon Decile was on 46.6 and is by Epiphaneia.  He beat Urban Chic at Nakayama at his last outing and missed the Satsuki Sho due to lameness and this may have been a blessing in disguise as his "fresh legs" enabled him to make the most of a rails run in the straight.

Justin Milano was favourite and ran well but had to work his way through the traffic on the home turn and was unable to catch the winner.  Shin Emperor delighted us with his run for third just ahead of the very fast finishing filly Regoleira but in her case the run was just too late.

News from America that Tyler Gaffalione has been replaced on Sierra Leone for the Belmont after his ride in the Kentucky Derby was not up to Chad Brown;s expectations.

Gaffalione was fined for touching another horse (Japanese runner Forever Young) in a bumping duel down the straight.  This should be music to the ears of those fans who thought the placings should be reversed and to probably the entire population of Japan!
