Ladbrokes Blog: Morphettville Preview – 14th September 2024

The Listed W H Wylie Handicap will headline a nine race card at Morphettville this Saturday. The rail will be out 11m from the 1200m to the winning post and 8m the remainder.

The track is currently rated a soft 6 and with only a minor showers predicted, it's expected to stay in the soft range.

We've had a close look at all nine events on the program and our thoughts can be found below.

RACE 1 - 12:52AM: SPRING RACING CARNIVAL AT MORPHETTVILLE HANDICAP BM64 (1100 METRES)

Palm of Jumeirah kicked off her preparation in style, recording a determined victory over 1000m at Murray Bridge.

At just her second race start, the Pride of Dubai filly let down strongly in the straight to reel in the leader who'd given a good kick at the top of the straight.

She then stepped out over this track and distance where she proved disappointing but was found to have pulled up lame, so I'm happy to forgive.

The wide draw is a slight concern but she looks to have plenty of upside and with luck in running, will be right in this.

Lachlan Neidorf partnered her to victory first up and he goes back aboard for Phillip Stokes.

RACE 2 - 1:27PM: FLEURIEU MILK COMPANY HANDICAP BM80 (2500 METRES)

Wuddzz had been racing well but was a touch plain last start over 2400m at Sandown.

Coming off a six week freshen up, he just wanted to race a bit keen with his head low as the pace slackened and was one paced over the final part.

He'll be better for that outing and this looks an ideal race for him.

A genuine stayer, the former Kiwi has performed well in good company and any moisture in the track will only enhance his chances.

Whist he does rise in grade, he drops to just 54kgs and barrier four should see him afforded all the favours under Dom Tourneur.

RACE 3 - 2:05PM: SAME RACE MULTI HANDICAP CLASS 2 (1050 METRES)

Dyer resumes.

The son of Zousain has just had the two race starts and showed good natural talent when saluting on debut over 1000m.

Given a short break following that run, he then stepped out over 1200m at Murray Bridge but faded late after enduring a wide run throughout.

Back to 1050m looks ideal and the blinkers go on for the first time.

Todd Pannell will do the steering for and Michael Hickmott and with luck form the draw, he can make his presence felt.

RACE 4 - 2:42PM: DENNIS UNDERWOOD HANDICAP HANDICAP 1MW (1200 METRES)

Girl returns to the races.

The Zoustar mare resumed in fine style last preparation, scoring a dominant vicortry over 1200m at Ballarat before going on to make it two on the trot with a gutsy win around the Valley.

A very handy mare on her day, the daughter of Zoustar has continued to work through the grades, boasting solid form around her and she should find this easier than what she's previously contested.

She looked sharp winning a recent 800m jump out and is set to receive all the favours from the low draw.

2 units – GIRL

RACE 5 - 3:17PM: THE FOTOBASE GROUP HANDICAP 0-62 (1536 METRES)

Zarkana has hit the line strongly in two runs back from a break and should relish the rise in trip here.

First up over 1200m the daughter of Trapeze Artist settled back near the rear and came the widest on the tun to charge home into second.

It was a similar story last start, again over the 1200m.

She boasts a terrific turn of foot and her sole win came over 1400m.

Only lightly raced, she'll continue to improve and with her racing pattern, the wide gate shouldn't prove a hinderance.

RACE 6 - 3:52PM: THOMAS FARMS HANDICAP BM70 (1536 METRES)

A Samurai Mind comes off an impressive second up victory and looks well placed to repeat that performance.

The son of Shamus Award has shown plenty of natural talent since his debut win back in February and looks to have a very bright future.

Never in hunt when resuming over 1100m, he followed them around after blowing the start but straight up to the mile last time, he jumped away clean and despite sitting three deep throughout, showed a strong kick in the straight to score easily.

With seven weeks since his most recent run, he's been given a 1000m to keep him up to the mark and the slight drop back to 1523m looks ideal.

Lachlan Neindorf has formed a good association with the gelding and he'll again do the steering.

RACE 7 - 4:32PM: FAST FORM HANDICAP 0-68 (1100 METRES)

Deepfloat Diva bounced back to his best last start recording a very impressive victory over 1000m on the Parks track.

Settling back in the field, he travelled wide but let down powerfully in the straight to score by a neat length.

A winner of three of his five starts, the Deep Field gelding certainly isn't short of talent and looks very progressive.

The inside draw can see him settle within striking distance and he did salute over 1100m in his first preparation.

Jake Toeroek knows him well and stays in the saddle for Richard and Chantelle Jolly.

RACE 8 - 5:07PM: W H WYLIE HANDICAP LISTED QUALITY (1100 METRES)

Sghirripa returns to the races.

The striking grey has recorded eight wins from his twenty one starts and has proven himself a quality sprinter, producing some solid performances against elite opposite.

After back to back wins here last Spring, he headed to Melbourne and measured up, saluting in the Listed Christmas Stakes and Group 3 Standish Handicap.

He wasn't far away last campaign in two runs at Group 1 level and he'll find this easier.

He does have to carry the big weight but he races well fresh and loves it here at Morphettville.

RACE 9 - 5:44PM: PFD PET FOODS HANDICAP 0-64 (1800 METRES)

Almonti failed to fire here two runs back in the heavy going but produced a much improved performance last time to get the job done.

With the blinkers on for the first time the Henry Dwyer trained gelding proved too strong over 1700m at Geelong.

The extra 100m here looks ideal for this son of Dundeel and he gets in nicely with the 2kg claim for Tatum Bull.
