The 2024/25 thoroughbred season concludes in Hobart on Sunday with an eight-race card. It’s a strong program to wrap things up, headlined by the 1400m Open Handicap.
The rail moves out to +9m after being at +6m last week. A significant rainfall forecast for Saturday is expected to bring another track in the soft range.
R1 Kevin Sharkie 2yo Maiden, 1200m
Geegees Missile (6) showed good promise in her maiden campaign and looked sharp winning her trial earlier in the week. Has good tactical early speed, should go very close. COLONEL BOGEY (1) resumes and looks the main danger. He ran on solidly on debut after being slowly away behind the smart Crack The Shutters. He was one of the standout performers at the Devonport trials and looks set to run very well. BELLA CHINKARA (4) has been placed at all 3 runs this time in and has a fitness edge on the top 2. UP TO TORI (9) was hardly tested winning her trial here and looks the pick of the two debutants. STREETFIGHTER VEGA (2) next best. Has a task from the wide gate.
R2 Thank You Tony Scott! Maiden/class 1, 1600m
Harrata (8) is a new arrival in the state coming off a 6-week break and does look the one to beat. Have to put a line through last start when given no hope. The second-placed run prior behind Knobelas is outstanding form for this. OBVIOUSLY GOOD (2) looks suited up in trip and gets winkers applied, slightly awkward gate the only negative. GEEGEE AUNTY JESS (7) is rock-hard fit and was a dominant winner last start on the synthetic. First time at Hobart for her is some query. SOUTH GEORGIA (9) is lightly raced and is yet another last start winner but has plenty of upside. WHOLESOME (11) is first up and may need the run but she's a handy mare and wouldn't be surprised if she ran well. RIPPEN GOLD (3) was successful last start leading throughout this track and trip but this is a tougher task. SIR JAG (4) and TOSEN FAME (10) wider first-4 hopes.
R3 Winning Edge Presentations Maiden, 1200m
Outbush (3) ran very well here last week behind the impressive Silver Dagger. Now returning to maiden grade will clearly be hard to beat but does have to carry an extra 7.5kg. ARTILLERY FIRE (9) resumes and only has to continue on from where she finished off last preparation and she'll go very close. ALPINE WOODS (8) was never likely after being slowly away at Devonport but did make steady ground. Extra trip should be in her favour. WANNABE ZIGGY (14) is another one resuming. She's been placed at both first up runs this track and is in the mix. MISTER MANIHI (2) is a wider player for first-4's but has had a stack of chances.
R4 Ladbrokes Form Genius C1 Hcp, 1200m
Olive Girl (3) was terrific first up off a lengthy break. The extra 100m looks perfect for her and draws for every possible. Should sit on the back of the likely leader TOUGH IMPACT (12) who should be at peak fitness now and is a must include in exotics. MATERIAL MADAM (5) won this track and trip in her first campaign and was quite impressive. Resumes and trialled nicely during the week. THEM'S THE BREAKS (6) has good ability and gets blinkers on for her return but will most likely be conceding a start. NAVARRE RIVER (1) was solid first up in a good form race and must respect.
R5 Ladbrokes Quick Multi Bm68 Hcp, 1200m
Street Diva (7) battled on well behind her smart stablemate first up and will strip fitter. ALPINE THUNDER (4) didn't fire last start but is usually around the money in these races. FURNEAUX (1) was never in the hunt last outing on the synthetic and returns to a venue where his record is very good. MAKE A DECISION (3) will be better for the first up run and is unbeaten second up. WARICA (5) never puts in a bad run but is yet to strike a blow at this track but that said he has run some good races. ESPRIT DIVA (9) wouldn't muster at all in the early stages last time but did finish off okay. RUBBLEONTHEDOUBLE (2) has been placed resuming but is more than likely to need this.
R6 Ladbrokes Mates Mode Pots C2 Hcp, 1400m
Island Warrior (1) is having her second run for her new stable. She was very good here last week and will relish stepping out to the 1400. ADACHI (4) was the best of the on-pace runners at Devonport copping pressure in the lead from the 600 and although no match at all for the winner Alpine Blast, he did beat the rest of them comfortably. CARNELIAN ROCK (6) was typically honest here last week over an unsuitable trip. A key player returning to the 1400. BAYBOUGG (5) goes well here and didn't have a lot of luck at Devonport. Should be at peak fitness now fifth run in. BAYSIDE (2) is stepping straight out of a win in class 1 company but is still on the improve. WEDNESDAY'S BOSS (8) next best, extra trip suits, then MISS DE LUNE (9) who has returned in good order.
R7 Aviso Tas Insurance Brokers Open Hcp, 1400m
A very strong off-season race. Can make a good case for several of them. Silver Dagger (10) could not have been any more impressive winning her past couple. Draws barrier 1 again !!!! 1400m is no issue. Just needs to take the next step. WINEGLASS BAY (5) has been a great get for the stable and remains unbeaten from his only 2 starts since arriving. This is harder but is still on the improve. KALIUWAA FALLS (4) return run behind Tsunami Sam was excellent. His last 600 was easily the quickest for the race. THESPIAN WATERS (3) has returned home from a couple of unplaced efforts at Flemington and will find this more to his liking. Has to carry 60kg but he has proven in the past he can handle big weights. ALVARINHO (8) a wider chance but would need to take plenty of improvement off the first up run.
R8 Kevin Sharkie Bm70 Hcp, 2100m
Happy Clan (3) had excuses at Devonport, caught wide throughout and then struck trouble in the straight, gets in well after the claim, knocked off Zulu Angel here 4 starts back. FASHION FOX (7) gets blinkers on again and returns to the grass after 5 consecutive runs on the synthetic. His last win was this track and distance in an easier race carrying 59kg. Looks well-placed here down on the minimum. SUGOI LEGEND (4) is fit and in form and narrowly beat GODDESS OF ROCK (5) here 2 starts back in a similar race. ALPINE KATE (8) was just no match last Sunday for Romanesco Fresco and will handle the 2100m no problem at all. JUST A NEEDS (10 looks a risk with 62kg. GEE GEE MISS QUITA (2) rises sharply in distance, not convinced she can measure up against some that are rock-hard fit.
