Wells to overcome the numbers

Veteran trainer Leon Wells has cut back his stable numbers in the past 18 months but most of his team will step out at the Devonport meeting on Sunday.

Racecourse : Devonport (Australia).
Racecourse : Devonport (Australia).

Leon Wells will take four of the six horses he has in work to the races, and all seem to have a chance of winning their respective events.

Alpine Dame is likely to be one of the favourites in the 1009m maiden after a close second in a similar race three weeks ago.

"It was a good run, she will be very hard to beat, she should get a gun run if not lead, she has worked well and done everything right since her last run," Wells said.

Alpine Dame has drawn barrier four and will be ridden by 3kg claiming apprentice Sam Kennedy, who has been riding in super form since flying in for the Tassie meetings each Sunday.

Wells has Say It With Words stepping out in what looks to be a tough class 1 over 1350m.

"He's a little bit disappointing really. He's a bit of a thinker, I think jumping to 1350m will suit him. On his work, he's in with a chance."

Say It With Words will be ridden by another apprentice, Jabez Johnstone.

Get 'Em Warrior is top weight in the 1150m class 2. He won at the track and distance two starts back before failing in Hobart on 20 July. Both his wins have been in Devonport over this trip.

"You can't fault the way he is going. He will be there somewhere, a little bit of a claim off his back will help, he's a good each-way chance."

Again, Johnstone has the ride. Get 'Em Warrior will carry 57kg after his 2kg claim.

Wells will round out the day with Geegee Aunty Jess, who won three starts back and was runner-up in a maiden/class 1 over 1650m three weeks ago. On Sunday, she tackles the same class but steps up in distance to 1880m and will start from the outside gate in a field of 13.

"She drew terribly, really. She's not much good this filly bit she does try her guts out, every time she goes around. She either runs second or third or wins some money, we can't fault the way she is, very healthy and very well in herself, she just needs a bit of luck from the draw."

Senior rider Codi Jordan has the mount.

Wells says Alpine Dame is probably the best chance of the quartet; he also thinks Geegees City Boy, trained by his son Trent,  is a strong chance in the 1150m BM68.

My best bet is Prince Of Khatun, who will only need to take last Tuesday's trial run into Sunday's race to be hard to beat in the 1150m 3yo maiden.

Racing gets underway at 13:00, with all the action on Tasracing Live.
