Staking Strategy: Launceston - Friday, 17th October 2025

The second night meeting of the season arrives in Launceston on Friday with an eight-race card.

R1 Ladbrokes Maiden/class 1, 1600m

Tizsa Nice Drop (11) finished just ahead of OPENSEA (2), OUR INDULGENCE (3) and SKELMORLIE (14) in a similar race a fortnight ago. She had the ideal transit there and can get the same here with a clean getaway from a low draw. ZURICH (7) gave Kirra-Lee Lane her first winner here last Sunday and now gets in with the same weight. This is much stronger, but up to 1600m likely suits. THIN RED LINE (6) has been solid in two Devonport runs and maps to be on pace in a race lacking much, which could suit a horse like RIPPEN GOLD (4) bowling on speed. EAGLEFURTHER (13) has its first Tassie start. Despite placing in 0/11, her form is a little better than that. TWICE THE ICE (12) and FINAL APPROACH (1) did enough behind Vino Novello, which could easily be the right form line given he looks to have some upside.

Staking Strategy: Tough race to start. With the rail +6m, I'll have something on Rippen Gold bowling on speed with the first use of the track. Respect for the $26-$8 move about Eaglefurther for a stable that has a brilliant record with tried horses. 1 unit to win on Rippen Gold (4) and Eaglefurther (13)

R2 Book Now For The Jackson Security Tasmanian Newmarket Maiden, 1200m

The Trine (5) was a touch slow away first-up but hit the line well in a race dominated on-speed. Pole draw here helps, and there's every chance he's short in the market. REGAL HUNTER (4) debuts at age four and trialled alongside a subsequent winner. AFFIRMATIONS (7) has been up and down in grade. This is much easier than her most recent efforts. HALEN (1) will be hitting the line, likely as he did back here in August. VERHOEVEN (6) draws wide for his first Tassie start but trialled okay against horses better than this grade. CAFFY (8), a minor hope off her two runs this preparation, where arguably she had excuses.

Staking Strategy: Two clear standouts for me. The Trine was a big run fresh and ticks plenty of boxes. Thought he might've been a touch shorter. Wary of the first starter Regal Hunter who I've liked the recent trials of. 8 units to win on The Trine (5) and 2 units to win on Regal Hunter (4)

R3 Mayhem In The Mounting Yard With Hugo Bladel 21st November Class 1 Handicap, 1400m

It's Jagger Time (1) and ANTHEIA (5) landed in the right spot in the race, won by Crack the Shutters and draw for the same here. They have the map advantage over the likes of COOL CONQUEST (10), TOORAK TREASURE (6) and SIR JAG (11), who each caught the eye with how they hit the line but will need the right race shape. KICKPASS (9) drops 6kg from a Devonport run where he tailed the field throughout but jumped $4.40. SAY IT WITH WORDS (7) was a good run last time and is a return ride for Dianne Parish. NAVARRE RIVER (2) was caught wide last time and finished alongside Sister Royal the start prior, which reads well for this.

Staking Strategy: It's Jagger Time and Antheia are the obvious two, but I think they're well enough found. If the swoopers can get warm, Toorak Treasure is a big price. 1 unit each-way on Toorak Treasure (6)

R4 Ladbrokes Big Bets Class 4, 1200m

Mastretta (6) relished the return to Launceston with a dominant win in quick time. She burnt the candle at both ends in that race and draws for a much softer run here. RUBBLE 'N' FUDD (1) will benefit from a first-up run where he didn't perform to market expectations. Interested to see what the betting does with him here. ESPRIT DIVA (5) caught the eye hitting the line last Sunday. She's up in class but better suited at this distance than resuming trio LILY LUELLA (4), ELEGANTLY WRITTEN (3) and THE LONGEST YARD (2). RUNAWAY STATEMENT (7) is ex-Phillip Stokes. She's only missed a place twice in eight 1200m runs.

Staking Strategy: Mastretta was $2.80 into $2 within 2 minutes of the market's opening, and I'm not surprised. She smashed the clock last time and looks to have found the perfect follow-up race. Odds around even money are fair for me. 5 units to win on Mastretta (6)

R5 The Baker Group 3yo Cup 21st November Bm68 Handicap, 2000m

For the first time, the 2000m starting point has been used in Launceston. Metaverse (1) gets in well after the 4kg claim and boxed on well fresh after setting a genuine tempo. He'll have a contest for the front with the likes of FAST THINKER (2) and EXALTED CROWN (8), also regular on-pace horses. VINO NOVELLO (5) and DON'T GIVE UP (6) both make the jump from maiden/class 1 company and give the impression that 2000m will suit. TUSKEGEE (4) disappointed last time he was past a mile, but has otherwise had a super prep. CHICANE (3) is on the quick back-up after landing in an impossible spot last Sunday.

Staking Strategy: A bit of pace comes out of the race with the scratching of Exalted Crown. Any of these could win without surprise. Something small on Don't Give Up who might be able to box seat, similar to last start. 1 unit to win on Don't Give Up (6)

R6 Art Hotel Bm60 Handicap, 1400m

Specialized (9) led from barrier to box last start, winning by a space. Wide draw here, but she's the logical leader once again. NIGHT INVADER (5) was scratched at the gates since she last raced and has been to the trials twice since then. She'll need luck, but is a horse with upside. NIGHT ACTION (4) was solid behind Kakia in a race run to suit those near the speed. ETHICAL DILEMMA (1) was climbing over heels in better grade but rises sharply in weight for the drop in class. NO ACCESS (7) always needs luck with his pattern, but is ticking over well enough for the new stable. MATERIAL MADAM (6) has been consistent this campaign. MYWORDIS (3) hasn't won for nearly 30 starts, which has seen his rating plummet to 59. Can't help but think he'll bob up with another win somewhere.

Staking Strategy: This is another speed map that's changed with the obvious pace coming out. She'll need a good Ganderton ride, but I think Night Invader is the best horse in the race. Suspect 1400m is right up her alley, even with the gap between runs. 2 units each-way on Night Invader (5)

R7 Ladbrokes Racing Extras In Multi Class 4, 1600m

Purr Sefanee (8) chases a hat-trick of wins, and as the only speed in the race, may get her chance despite making the jump from a maiden/class 1 to a class 4. ONLY OLD ONCE (7) and MILES 'N' MILES (6) savaged the line from well back here in the race won by Kakia. This race sets up similarly with a lack of pressure up front. LAUNNIE NIGHTS (4) was 1200-1650m last start, so should strip fitter and has trialled since then.

Staking Strategy: Three main hopes here, which the market has found. The map just looks ideal for Purr Sefanee to do what she's done recently in a lesser grade. Only Old Once and Miles 'N' Miles the obvious dangers. 2 units to win on Purr Sefanee (8)

R8 Ladbrokes Mega Multi Bm60 Handicap, 1200m

There hasn't been much between the Keys pair Turf Puzzle (8) and SKY LAND (3), and they both draw to land in the right spot. The speed is drawn out wide through THE LAST HURRAH (1) and RED SPHERE (2). The rail +6m likely suits those up near the pace, and that'll certainly be known by the final race. BAYBOUGG (6) I thought trialled better than stablemate ARAYA SUNSHINE (7), with them likely needing some luck from back in the field. WILLINGLY (5) won for the stable at her first appearance, but she may find the 1200m a bit sharp.

Staking Strategy: Open BM60 to finish, but I have Turf Puzzle as a decent over. No reason she shouldn't get every chance here and is a comfortable each-way price. 2 units each-way on Turf Puzzle (8)
