Rumeur for Coffs Harbour glory

The fifth race of the day at Coffs Harbour is a 2015m Class 1 set weights contest due to take place on a heavy 10 surface.

The Kris Lees-trained Oakfield Hawk has demonstrated a liking for testing conditions in his last two starts.

The gelding lost out by a narrow margin when jumping at $26 when contesting a 1600m event at Taree on 20th May and he duly went one better a week later.

The three-year-old won over 1900m in a Class 1 event when last in action, with both of those efforts coming on heavy going.

However he steps up in distance here and he looks opposable in this field.

Anthony Allen's mount RUMEUR is preferred on this occasion, having broken his maiden at Tauranga in New Zealand in a 1600m contest in March.

The pick jumped at big odds when racing on a soft 5 track that day and went on to deliver a good fourth when racing over 2100m in an Ellerslie Group 3 the following month.

While the gelding failed to shine when failed off over 2180m at Ipswich on his Australian debut, he returned with thumps and heat stress on that occasion.

The drop in grade should help the son of Mongolian Khan, who is taken to return to winning ways on his first start on a heavy 10 track.

Sid for Sunshine Coast success

The penultimate contest at Sunshine Coast is a 1600m Benchmark 58 handicap event.

Kariaction is expected to have her supporters, having demonstrated solid form in maiden company at this venue in her two starts to date.

The first of those saw her place third in a 1400m maiden on a soft 7 track. while she broke her maiden when saluting over the same distance on 31st May.

The filly raced on a heavy 10 surface last time out with jockey Michael Hellyer retaining the ride here.

While open to improvement, she tackles more experienced rivals here and preference is for SOCK'EMSID, who completed a hat-trick when winning at Toowoomba last month.

The five-year-old found a metro Benchmark 68 handicap too hot when fading, having raced wide early in a 1640m contest at Doomben subsequently..

Brendan Jones' gelding tackles an easier event here, having won over 1625m on a soft 6 track when racing at Benchmark 60 level in the previously mentioned Toowoomba race.

The son of Mahisara had previously won over 1400m at Gatton and he has performed well on his home track in the past.

Those course efforts included a track and trip second, when losing out narrowly in a similar race to this on a soft 7 track at the start of February.

Sophie Wilcock takes three-kilograms off the top weight's back and her mount looks up to returning to winning ways.

Up to break maiden for Maher

The second race on the synthetic track at Ballarat is a 1200m three-year-old maiden with LAYIN' UP taken to register her first win.

Trained by Ciaron Maher, the filly demonstrated ability when racing on turf at this track on debut on 26th May.

The daughter of Cable Bay came home third, beaten just over two-and-a-half-lengths in a small field when racing on a soft 5 track that day.

Layin' Up is expected to have improved for that experience, with the step up in distance likely to suit.

The switch to a synthetic track should prove no issue with an inside alley a positive in this contest.
