Keep An Eye On: Blackbookers - 27th August 2025

Midweek racing was from Sandown and Kensington this week and we've got a horse to follow from each meeting.

Sandown - Trapdoor

Punters can sometimes find it hard to be sympathetic towards a horse beaten as a short-priced favourite, but Trapdoor is one they should be forgiving of. The Hawkes Racing gelding went around $2.25 off the strength off his ultra-impressive Geelong debut win and he turned in one of the runs of the day despite being beaten a half-length. The son of Brutal travelled three-wide without cover throughout on a day when it was advantageous to be as close to the fence as possible, which was where the winner Flying Valley travelled throughout. Trapdoor will be clearly the horse to beat in a similar grade of race next time out, but if he is stepped up in class, don't be too dismissive of the fact he was beaten at a short quote at his previous start because the run was much better than it appears.

Kensington – Officiate

The Chris Waller-trained filly might have been costly to in-play operators after appearing home and hosed at the 150m in Wednesday's first race, but although beaten her run hinted that she is in for a good campaign. The daughter of Justify was making her first appearance since flopping at her only run as a two-year-old, but backed up some good trials with a super return at a big price in the 1250m maiden. After settling midfield, Tommy Berry peeled Officiate around them turning for home and the filly showed a sharp turn of foot to dash to the front at the 200m before being cut down late by Siriusly Hot, who came from last but hugged the fence around the bend and got a dream run through the field. Officiate will be better for that and while still eligible for a maiden, it wouldn't be a shock if she acquits herself well in even better grade.
