Canterbury racecourse is situated just 15 minutes from the CBD and its role in the NSW racing set up is as the predominant midweek and night racing site.

The track is only a small venue perfectly suited to the night racing fixtures. Huge crowds in recent years have frequented the course with festival of food stalls and kids’ facilities have attracted them.

Canterbury used to hold one main Saturday metro meeting a season with the Group 1 Canterbury Guineas near the start of the Autumn Carnival over 1900m as the first of the 3yo triple crown.

However that race became the Randwick Guineas run over the mile in 2006 so Canterbury lost its main race.

Considered the best surface in Sydney, the track is an oval shape with one main chute for the sprints from 1000m to 1250m. 1550m races begin on the side of the course and 1900m at the top of the straight.
