Suzie Songs stays on gamely to grab Anglesey Stakes success

Ger Lyons looks to have another talented filly on his hands after Suzie Songs made it two from two with a battling victory in the Jebel Ali Racecourse And Stables Anglesey Stakes at the Curragh.

Just thirty-five minutes after watching Lady Iman lose her unbeaten record to Aidan O'Brien's Beautify, Ger Lyons might have been expecting a similar fate as Suzie Songs geared up to take on Ballydoyle's 1/4 favourite Flushing Meadows, who created a sizeable impression when making a winning debut on the Curragh earlier in the month.

There was little to separate the duo as they approached the final 50 yards but under an all-action Colin Keane, the Moyglare Stud-owned daughter of Starspangledbanner found more in the closing stages to fend off Flushing Meadows by a short-head.

Lyons, who landed the prize twelve months ago with subsequent Group 1 winner Babouche, told the PA: "It was a last-minute decision (to run), but the beautiful thing about training for Moyglare is you are allowed to do that, there are no set plans.

"I'm blessed with owners like that; I wake up and I change my mind and do whatever.

"We were watching the entries, it wasn't the plan, and she hasn't worked since Cork, and I just threw her in."

Ger Lyons filly could now be in line to take on Aidan O'Brien's Beautify, who beat Lady Iman earlier on the card, with the handler pointing out the Moyglare Stud Stakes as a possible next target.

He added: "I thought it got to her today, so we'll give her a wee break, and we'll come back for the Moyglare. It's a race I'd love to put on the CV.

"Colin said in Cork that she wanted further and sticking to the original plan her next race would have been seven, but this presented itself during the week with no entries, so here we are."
