Trainer Dominic Sutton has elected a 1400m contest on Melbourne Cup Day rather than stepping the colt up in trip. 

Trainer Dominic Sutton feels Sulek will relish stepping out in distance but in the meantime he is happy to bide his time. 

Sutton had the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) in mind for the son of Super Seth on Victoria Derby Day but instead has elected to run the colt in the Listed Amanda Elliott (1400m) on Melbourne Cup Day at Flemington. 

Sulek has been to the races on just three occasions, registering a maiden win at Sandown on October 1 over 1400m at start number two. 

Sutton elected to head to Caulfield for Sulek's next outing, again over 1400m, and Sulek finished a respectable third to Bacash. 

After two 1400m runs, Sutton said the logical step would have been to rise to 1600m, but Sutton said in the best interests of the horse he had decided to remain at 1400m. 

Sulek will be ridden by Craig Williams and has drawn barrier two in the 17-horse field that has one emergency acceptor. 

"We had a look at the Carbine Club on Saturday," Sutton said. 

"We feel he's looking for a mile soon but at the same time we just felt another run at 1400 metres would suit him better. 

"The 1400 metres at Caulfield is a little different to the 1400 metres at Flemington, and to step up to the mile at Flemington, he is better suited to the seven furlongs just at this stage." 

Sutton said the Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on November 15 may come under consideration for Sulek depending on his performance on Tuesday.
